Multimedia & Information Technology Lab

The Multimedia & Information Technology Lab is a multiplatform lab of Macintosh and Windows 2000 workstations. This lab supports the curriculum of the Department of Information Studies. Follow the links below to find information about various aspects of the lab

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Where can I find information about the Department's email mailing lists?
A: There is a description of the email lists here.

Q: Where do I put my web pages when I want them to be made publically available?
A: Place your html and graphic files in the \HTML directory of your network (G:) drive.

Q: What will the URL be for my web pages?
A: The URL for student web pages will be of the form:

http://polaris.gseis.ucla.edu/your_ username/your_file.htm

You will also need to replace "your_username" with your IS network username, and of course the name of the file you are connecting to.

Q: How do I get my pages linked to the Department's Web site?
A: Send email to Justin Scott or David Cappoli, telling them the name of your home page (which you've placed in the directory specified above).

Q: What if I just want my email listed on the Department's Web site?
A: Send email to Justin Scott or David Cappoli and request that your email be listed on the Web site.

Q: How do I send email from a link on a Web page while working on the PC's in the lab?
A: In order to use Eudora to send email from Netscape, you first need to start the "Mailto" program by double clicking on the link on the Desktop.

Q: Can I access files on my G: drive from home?
A: Yes, the network drive is accesible via FTP. Bruin Online comes with an FTP client (called Ws-FTP on the PC and Fetch on MAC). The "remote host" to connect to is: polaris.gseis.ucla.edu and you log in using your IS username and password. Once you've logged in, you should be able to navigate to your own directory. Note that your directory is filed alphabetically under your USERNAME, which in most cases is the first initial of your first name. A full guide can be found here.

Q: What sort of computer should I buy?
A: Due to constant changes in technology, and the differences in the needs of individuals, the lab is not in a position to recommend any specific brand or type of computer. We have come up with a set of general guidelines that you can use as a starting point in your research for a new computer. Please be aware the MIT Lab does not support personal computers (laptops or home machines) in any way.
