RefWorks

General Information

The IS Department has complimentary access to RefWorks -- an online research management and collaboration tool -- designed to help researchers easily gather, manage, store and share all types of information, as well as generate citations and bibliographies.

This is a web-based bibliographic utility allows you to compile biblographies similar to the desktop programs ProCite and EndNote. It is accessible both in and outside of the GSE&IS building.

Please note that you will continue to have access to RefWorks via the Department of Information Studies for one full quarter after completing your studies. At that time, it will be your responsibility to either migrate the data out of RefWorks, or purchase a subscription to RefWorks to continue to have access to your data.

Subscription Information for Individuals

Accounts for users not affiliated with the UCLA Department of Information Studies will be deleted.

To subscribe to RefWorks:

  1. Go to http://www.refworks.com/refworks
  2. If in the lab, click on "Sign up for an Individual Account" and complete the form. Please enter your full name in the Your Name field because accounts with incomplete information will be deleted. Also, keep in mind that your login name and password are case sensitive.
  3. If not in the lab, enter the Group Information Code. Then click on "Sign up for an Individual Account" and complete the form. The Group Information Code is available from the lab. Once you have entered your the Group Information Code, continue to follow the instruction for account set-up and/or access. When prompted, please enter your full name in the Your Name field because accounts with incomplete information will be deleted. Also, keep in mind that your login name and password are case sensitive.
  4. You will receive an email message with your personal account information. Hold on to this email for future reference.
  5. If you would like to change the login name and password or update your e-mail address select Update User Info from within the program.
  6. Once you have created your account, it is strongly recommended that you take the RefWorks tutorial at http://refworks.com/tutorial/.

When creating your RefWorks account you were required to enter your full name. If you have not done so, please log onto RefWorks and go to Tools -- Update User Information and enter your full name in the Your Name field. Failure to include your full name may result in having your account deleted.

Getting Started

To access RefWorks:

  1. Go to http://www.refworks.com/refworks
  2. If in the lab, enter your account information.
  3. If not in the lab, enter the Group Information Code and your account information. This code may occasionally change to prevent unauthorized access. If you find you need an updated code, you will need to request it from the MIT Lab.
  4. If you want assistance getting started with RefWorks, go to http://refworks.com/tutorial/ for a tutorial.

Group RefWorks Accounts

Group RefWorks accounts are available for the following uses:

  • Students working on a course project
  • Students working on a group independent study project
  • Faculty and students working on research projects

To request a group account, submit to the following to <labuse@gseis.ucla.edu> with the subject line “Group RefWorks Account”:

  • Course name and number, and quarter OR name of research project, if unaffiliated with a course
  • Names of group members
  • Name and e-mail of individual who will be the main contact person for the group
  • Expiration date of project -  please note that the group accounts for course projects will expire 14 days after the end of the quarter in which the course was taught *

* It is your responsibility to migrate the data out of RefWorks prior to your account’s expiration date.

After your request for an account has been submitted and verified, the main contact person will receive a Group Account ID, password, and a Group Code for accessing RefWorks outside of the GSE&IS Building.
