Guide to Scanning in the Lab: Images
Please note: Images must be scanned on Sirius or Supernova. Since there are only two scanning workstations in the lab, please save scans to your Z: drive and edit them with Adobe Photoshop on one of the other computers.

Scanning with Sirius
1. Open the scanner by raising the lid and place your image face-down on the glass panel. Place the material to be scanned in the bottom right corner.
2. Open Adobe Photoshop by clicking START - ALL PROGRAMS - ADOBE PHOTOSHOP CS3. You must scan through Photoshop, not directly through MagicScan.
3. From the Photoshop File menu, click on IMPORT - MAGICSCAN 32 V. 4.5.
4. Several MagicScan windows (palettes) will appear. Minimize the Scan Job List box.

5. From the MagicScan Preview Window, click PREVIEW. MagicScan will create a quick preview of the document and display it in the preview window.

6. Use the Scanner Control Window to choose output details such as True Color, Gray 256 scales or Line Art B/W. You may also set the resolution of the image in DPI (dots per inch) value. This setting should be determined by the end use of the image. Note that higher DPI = larger file size.
- For website and presentation slide images, 75 DPI is usually sufficient.
- For printed materials, 200 DPI is usually sufficient.

8. The image will be scanned into Photoshop. (It appears in a new Photoshop window that may be hidden behind the MagicScan palettes.) Once the scan is complete, close the MagicScan preview palette. This exits MagicScan.
