Technology SupportThesis & Dissertation DefensesGeneral Lab Responsibilities The Lab staff is responsible only for technology support for defenses, and such support must fall within the range regularly provided by the Lab. The Lab cannot reconfigure a classroom’s furniture layout, or provide additional equipment, such as a special type of podium or stool, for a student’s presentation. If a student chooses to reconfigure a room’s layout, s/he is responsible for returning the furniture to its original configuration. Frequently Asked Questions Q: Am I required to use a computer or other technology for my defense? A: If there is a question about whether technology should be used for one's defense, this is best discussed with the student's advisor. Q: I have not used technology much during my time as an IS student yet I am considering using a certain software application during my presentation. What should I do? A: If you are planning on using a software application or technology for your presentation, yet you are unfamiliar with the application or technology, you should either reconsider its use or devote your time to becoming familiar with it well before your presentation. Q: How much help can I get from the Lab staff in preparing my presentation? A: The Lab staff is responsible for setting up equipment for the portfolio presentations. If you have a question about your presentation as it is being prepared, the staff can attempt to answer that question but it is not realistic for the staff to devote much time to helping you prepare your presentation. Q: What kind of technology can I request for my defense? A: The following equipment is available from the Lab for your defense:
Q: What equipment do I need to reserve? A: There is no need to reserve an overhead projector since there is one in every classroom. You will need to reserve a computer or other technology for your defense, but should first speak with Keri, David, or Justin. They can tell you what equipment is available for the date and time being considered for your defense. Q: Will I need my IS account and password to use the computer? A: You will need to know your account and password to use the Windows workstation or laptop. If using the Mac laptop, you will need your account and password to access your G: Drive. If you have forgotten your account and/or password, please contact Keri, David, or Justin well in advance of your presentation. Q: Can I connect to my Z: Drive? A: Using your IS account and login to access the Windows workstation or laptop will automatically connect you to your Z: Drive. The Mac laptop has a guide to connecting to your Z: Drive. Q: I will be using some sort of technology in my defense, but I am still unsure what I will need. Should I request everything that I MIGHT need? A: Request only what you will need. If you have some questions about technology and what you might be able to use, you should speak to Keri, David, or Justin well in advance of your defense. Q: Can I use my own laptop during my defense? A: The Lab cannot accommodate requests for using personal laptops for presentations because 1) additional, and often unavailable, time is needed to set up the laptop with the projector; and, 2) there is no guarantee that a personal laptop will work properly in our environment. Q: Can I request additional or different technology for my defense, e.g., a VCR and TV for video playback? A: First confirm that you will need additional or different technology and that the Lab can support them by speaking to Keri, David, or Justin well in advance of your defense. If the Lab can support your request, you must complete and submit an online AV request form at <http://is.gseis.ucla.edu/lab/avorder/>. Q: What if I have special needs for the computer, e.g., showing a video on DVD? A: First confirm that you will have these special needs and that the Lab can support them by speaking to Keri, David, or Justin well in advance of your defense. Q: How can I practice my defense? A: You should rehearse your defense on one of the nine Windows workstations nearest the Lab staff desk (not the 10 solar system PCs). These workstations are identical to the one which be used for the presentation. You may also practice your defense on one of the Lab's mac workstations. Q: Will I be able to practice my defense in a classroom with a computer and projector? A: If you need a practice setup in a classroom, you must speak to Keri, David, or Justin well in advance of your defense. You must also check with Lydia Doplemore regarding room availability. Q: What types of backups should I have for my defense? A: Have a copy of your defense presentation on your G: Drive and, if possible, e-mail yourself a copy as well. Additionally, have another backup on removable media, e.g., USB key, etc. Q: Can I print my full thesis or dissertation in the Lab? A: Printing your thesis or portfolio will be charged to a your print quota. If you choose to print a copy of your thesis or dissertation, the Lab requests that you print only one copy so as not to monopolize the Lab's printers. After printing a single copy in the Lab, you should make any additional copies at a professional photocopy service. Q: Is a color printer available for use in the Lab? A: A color printer is not available in the Lab. |
